Sound Design - Design Concept: "Envelope the audience in each story creating soundscapes based on individual biases"
Composition - Design Concept: "Reflect each individual with a vast amount of genres and diverse textures"
This was one of the original drawings that I was provided with. I was told that most everything was still subject to change except for a few things: the size of the seating and the dropped lighting grid.
This was my initial concept for the playback system. I knew that the Sound Design team wanted some type of surround sound system, specifically for the audience (I based it off of a standard 5.1 surround setup), and they wanted to be able to have content localize to any of the three projector screens (I used four speakers, above and below the screens, to localize the sound to any of the screens).
After choosing speaker models that the Visual and Performing Arts Department had in stock, I learned that the placement of the audience seating/set had changed in the space. The seating was now right under the control booth (the large rectangle at the bottom of the drawing) in McArdle theater. I compensated by moving my two rear speakers to the center and adding hanging speakers on both sides of the audience (as well as two more above the audience). I also added one more speaker in the air at the screens to help localize sounds to the center screen.
I woke up one morning with an email about another change in the plans; there were now going to be five separate projection screens instead of the original three. I decided to spread-out my screen speakers to compensate, as well I added audience side speakers that would sit on the floor (to help lower the spacial image).
The audience seating/stage moved one more time (moving closer to the bottom right corner of the drawing) and I had to rethink my plan again. I separated my rear speakers into a parallel array, changed the location of the audience side speakers on the floor, and refined the placement of the my screen speakers (2 floor speakers, 1 center speaker 24' above the deck, and 2 side speakers 18' above the deck).
At this time it was also decided that I would eliminate my Left, Center, and Right audience surround channels. They would be replaced with the vocal reinforcement speakers (that would also be utilized for playback).
My final speaker plot before the sound system was scheduled to be installed...
In the hours leading up to the system install, it was discovered that multiple speakers I had been planning on using were either going to be unavailable or "impossible" to rig in the space. Therefore a few last second changes were made that included swapping out the two rear speakers for smaller models, swapping out the two side-screen speakers for higher quality speakers, and shifting the placement of the center-screen speaker.
